Beach Cleanup 2026: Uncovering the Hidden Threat at Fonte da Telha
As the summer season winds down and the beach crowds fade, our coastlines are often left with a hidden aftermath. September marks a critical moment for our marine ecosystems. If we do not act before the autumn storms and high tides arrive, months of forgotten plastic waste and debris will be washed directly into the ocean.
To tackle this Post-Summer Challenge, the Crossjoin Solutions team partnered with Associação Bandeira Azul for a hands-on Beach Cleanup at Fonte da Telha.
The Illusion of a Clean Beach

At first glance, the beach looked pristine. But as our volunteers got to work, Friends, Family & Crossers, the reality right under our feet was surprising.
Once we started sifting through the sand, we uncovered a massive amount of hidden plastics, bottle caps, and even a butter knife. Many cigaret buds, plastic ropes, and many other debris buried just beneath the surface.
It was a demanding workout, but the results spoke for themselves. In just 40 minutes, our small team collected 6 KG of waste from the sand.
Small Details, Massive Impact
Most of the waste we collected consisted of cigarette butts and fragmented plastics. Why is this so critical? A single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 50 liters of water. By removing these small plastic fragments from the beach, we prevent marine life from ingesting them, protecting the entire food chain just off our coast.
Associação Bandeira Azul is renowned for promoting sustainable beaches and environmental education in Portugal. Working alongside them opened our eyes to how every small gesture counts.

How was it?
Tiago Martinho
It was a great experience to step away from our daily routine, spend some quality time with colleagues, and make a positive impact on the environment. It felt really rewarding to give back to nature, all while having fun and adding a bit of friendly competition to see who could find the most unusual object on the beach.

Giving Month:
Our Drive Continues After getting our hands dirty for a great cause, we wrapped up the day by relaxing together and enjoying a beautiful sunset at Cabana Beach Bar.
Our Giving Month 2026 might be over, but our drive to help our local community and the environment continues. If we can make this kind of dent in just 40 minutes, imagine the impact we can all make together.
